Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is the treatment of a person's problems by conversing with a psychotherapist: "talk therapy." With successful psychotherapy, a client changes in a positive way, resolving or mitigating troublesome behaviours, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts and emotions. Ideally, these are replaced with more pleasant and functional alternatives.

Psychotherapy includes interactive processes between a person or group and a psychotherapist. Its purpose is the exploration or resolution of troublesome thoughts, feelings and behaviour for the purpose of problem-solving or achieving higher levels of functioning. Psychotherapy aims to increase the individual's sense of his/her own well-being. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication, and behaviour change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family). A Psychotherapist identifies the right course of action for you, either to help you resolve your difficulties or help you find ways of coping. Brief therapy or short term therapy might provide a maximum of 6, 8, 10 or 12 sessions. Confidentiality is essential in a therapy relationship as part of building trust.

Psychotherapy provides a client with the opportunity to express their feelings in a secure place. This can facilitate a release, reduce the pain the client is experiencing, and deepen awareness about the underlying cause of the problems. The psychotherapist will encourage the client to look at aspects of their life, at their relationships and themselves, which they may not have thought of or felt able to face before.

Some of the situations in which Psychotherapy is indicated are :
• Any persistent difficulties or distress
• Dissatisfaction with life; Loss of a sense of direction or purpose.
• Depression, stress, anxiety, tension, poor self image
• Marital discord; Relationship difficulties
• Irrational behaviour, obsessive compulsive behaviour, academic & emotional difficulties, etc
